The portal warns that the newest filing may not appear at once. Court notices and source documents control. The official portal view is shown in the court's own search entry.
That login gate and search cap make the clerk's Records Division a necessary fallback, not an optional extra.
Official Background Checks in California
The California Department of Justice does not provide a public name-search portal for state rap sheets. California residents who want to review their own state criminal history use Criminal Records: Request Your Own. Complete Live Scan Form BCIA 8016RR, mark “Record Review” as both the application type and reason, fill in the personal data, and take the form to a Live Scan location.
Kings County Sheriff's Office offers Live Scan by appointment at 1550 Kings County Drive in Hanford. Call (559) 852-2790 to schedule. DOJ processing charges apply, and the rolling fee can vary by scan site. The DOJ record-review instructions show the official subject-access route.
Live Scan is identity-based, so it answers a different question from a public court-name search and reduces the risk of matching the wrong person.
Kings County Sheriff Records Channels
The Sheriff's Records Division holds calls for service, incident reports, criminal investigations, traffic citations, custody records, vehicle records, and sex and arson registrations. It is also the county warrant repository and processes or verifies arrest warrants issued by the courts. No online sheriff report-copy portal was found, so requests go to the division directly.

Kings County Court Copies
The clerk's Records Division serves active and archived public files. Requests may be made in person or by mail. A written request should include the defendant's name, date of birth, case number if known, requested documents, and the requester's name, address, and phone. The clerk calculates the total, then mails copies after receiving payment and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

California Public Access Laws
The California Public Records Act applies to many agency records, but it does not erase privacy and safety limits. Court case records follow judicial access rules, while DOJ summary criminal history has a narrower distribution law. Police reports may be withheld or redacted when an investigation, juvenile, victim, witness, or confidential detail is protected.

Do not confuse a civil bench-warrant service fee with the process for a criminal bench warrant. The court or attorney can explain whether an appearance, recall request, bail, or other action is required.
Restricted, Sealed & Expunged Records
California often calls Penal Code section 1203.4 relief “expungement,” but the process is technically a dismissal after withdrawal of a plea or verdict. It does not erase the physical file. Eligibility and the effect of relief depend on the case. Related statutes cover some misdemeanors, local sentences, automatic conviction relief, arrest sealing, and juvenile sealing.
A dismissed case may still leave an index trail or appear in a source that has not yet received the updated disposition. Juvenile files, sealed arrests, protected victim data, and confidential reports may be absent from public results even though an authorized agency can still access them. If your own DOJ record appears wrong, obtain the fingerprint-based record review first and use DOJ's correction process. For a court error, compare the portal entry with the signed order or clerk record.
Other California provisions include sections 1203.4a, 1203.41, and 1203.42 for specified conviction circumstances, plus section 1203.425 for automatic conviction record relief. Arrest sealing under section 851.91 is a separate remedy. The right starting point depends on whether the entry is an arrest, a filed case, a conviction, or a juvenile matter. Relief in one system may need time to reach the other record holders.
Kings County Records Under One Roof
Before 2016, Kings Superior Court work was spread among four government-center buildings in Hanford, while family matters were handled at the Lemoore courthouse. The current Hanford courthouse opened on February 16, 2016 after construction on a roughly 9.5-acre site next to the county jail. Its approximately 12 courtrooms consolidated services that had been split across older sites.

The consolidation explains why a modern Kings County criminal case now routes to Hanford even when the arrest began in Lemoore or Corcoran. Older records can still require help from the clerk because retention and former locations affect what is available online.
Kings County Custody Boundaries
The county jail is only one custody system in Kings County. The jail locator covers people currently housed by Kings County. California Incarcerated Records & Information Search, known as CIRIS, covers people in CDCR custody. That distinction matters in Avenal and Corcoran, where major state prisons operate near city and county agencies. A state prisoner at Avenal State Prison, California State Prison-Corcoran, or the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility will not be found through a city police log or the county jail merely because the institution is in Kings County.
Federal custody is separate again and belongs in the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator. Probation is county-run, including adult and juvenile probation, pretrial monitoring, and postrelease community supervision. State parole is supervised through CDCR's Division of Adult Parole Operations. Search the system that holds the person, not just the place name.
The same boundary applies to court files. A state-prison incident can lead to a Kings Superior Court case when local prosecutors file California charges, but the prison's custody record remains with CDCR. A federal case arising from Naval Air Station Lemoore belongs to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California and is searched through PACER. County, state, and federal records can describe connected events without becoming one combined public file.
